Glossary of Indian Textile Terms

A guide to terms used in Indian saree and textile traditions. A definition does not verify the fibre, loom, geographical origin or certification of an individual Neem Tres product; check the specific listing for those details.

Banarasi
A term associated with the textile traditions of Varanasi (Banaras), including decorative weaving and zari work. Fibres, techniques and motifs vary by piece. Explore Varanasi Vignette.
Brocade
Woven decorative patterning, often with supplementary yarns. The composition of any metallic-looking yarn varies by textile.
Butidar
A design with small scattered motifs, or butis, across the cloth.
Geographical Indication (GI)
A designation linked to goods from a defined region under applicable rules. A category name or this glossary is not evidence that any individual saree is certified.
Handloom
Fabric woven on a manually operated loom. Whether an individual product is handloom should be confirmed from its listing and supporting information.
Jangla
A term used for dense, often floral or foliate all-over motifs in Banarasi textiles.
Kasavu
A term associated with gold-toned borders in Kerala saree traditions; it is also used more broadly for the saree style. Details differ by piece. Explore Balaramapuram Kasavu.
Katan
A silk yarn or fabric term used in descriptions of some Banarasi sarees. Consult the specific listing for fibre details.
Pallav (Pallu)
The end section of a saree worn over the shoulder; it may carry distinct patterning or decoration.
Pit Loom
A loom arrangement in which the weaver sits below the level of part of the loom. Mention of this technique here does not establish its use for every Banarasi saree.
Tanchoi
A term associated with patterned woven textiles; specific construction varies.
Zari
A metallic-looking yarn used in weaving or embroidery. Composition varies, so gold- or silver-coloured zari should not be assumed to contain precious metal.
Zardozi
A decorative embroidery tradition using metallic-looking threads and sometimes beads or sequins.
