    Ikat is one of the most technically demanding textile techniques in the world — and one of the most visually distinctive. The characteristic soft-edged, slightly blurred quality of ikat patterns is not a flaw; it is the fingerprint of the process itself.

    This guide explains what ikat is, the difference between single and double ikat, and how to choose the right ikat saree.

    What is Ikat?

    Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which threads are tied and dyed in precise patterns before they are woven into fabric. When the dyed threads are woven together, the pre-dyed pattern emerges in the cloth. The slight blurring at the edges of ikat motifs — called the “feathering” effect — is a natural result of the process and is considered a mark of authenticity.

    The word ikat comes from the Malay/Indonesian word mengikat, meaning “to tie” or “to bind.”

    Single Ikat

    In single ikat, only one set of threads is resist-dyed before weaving — either the warp (threads running lengthwise) or the weft (threads running crosswise), but not both.

    • Warp ikat: The warp threads are dyed; the pattern runs vertically in the finished fabric
    • Weft ikat: The weft threads are dyed; the pattern runs horizontally

    Single ikat produces a design with a characteristic soft edge on one axis. It is less time-intensive than double ikat but still requires considerable skill to execute well.

    Double Ikat

    In double ikat, both the warp and weft threads are resist-dyed before weaving. The weaver must then align both sets of dyed threads precisely during weaving so that the patterns meet correctly in the finished cloth. This requires extraordinary skill and patience — a single misalignment can disrupt the entire design.

    Double ikat produces a design that is identical on both sides of the fabric — a hallmark of exceptional craftsmanship. Only a handful of weaving traditions globally produce true double ikat. In India, Patan Patola from Gujarat is the most celebrated double ikat tradition.

    Ikat in India

    India has several distinct ikat weaving traditions:

    • Patan Patola (Gujarat): Pure silk double ikat, considered among the most technically complex textiles in the world
    • Pochampally / Bhoodan Pochampally (Telangana): Both single and double ikat in silk and cotton; GI-tagged
    • Sambalpuri (Odisha): Single and double ikat in silk and cotton with distinctive geometric and nature-inspired motifs; GI-tagged
    • Rajkot Patola (Gujarat): Single ikat silk sarees with bold geometric patterns

    How to Identify Genuine Ikat

    • Look for the characteristic feathered or slightly blurred edge on motifs — this is a sign of genuine resist-dyeing, not a printing defect
    • In double ikat, the design should be identical on both sides of the fabric
    • Genuine handwoven ikat will have minor irregularities in the weave — these are marks of authenticity
    • Machine-printed “ikat-look” fabrics have sharp, uniform edges and no variation — they are not true ikat

    How to Choose an Ikat Saree

    • For a collector’s piece: Double ikat in pure silk is the most technically demanding and valuable
    • For everyday or festive wear: Single ikat in cotton or silk is more accessible and equally beautiful
    • For a bold, graphic look: Look for geometric patterns in high-contrast colours
    • For a softer aesthetic: Weft ikat with floral or organic motifs in muted tones

    Caring for an Ikat Saree

    Dry clean only for silk ikat. Cotton ikat may be gently hand-washed in cold water. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth away from direct sunlight. Avoid contact with perfume or deodorant directly on the fabric.
