A Banarasi silk saree is not just a garment — it is an investment, an heirloom, and in many cases a piece of living craft history. With the right care, a well-made Banarasi saree will last decades and only grow more beautiful with time. With the wrong care, even the finest piece can deteriorate quickly.
Here is everything you need to know about caring for your Banarasi silk saree.
Cleaning
Always dry clean
Banarasi silk sarees — particularly those with zari work — should always be dry cleaned. Water can damage the silk fibres, cause colours to bleed, and tarnish or distort the zari. Always take your saree to a dry cleaner who has experience with silk and zari textiles.
Do not wash at home
Even gentle hand washing is not recommended for Banarasi silk sarees with zari. The metallic threads in zari are sensitive to water and detergent, and washing can cause them to tarnish, loosen, or break. For plain silk sarees without zari, consult a specialist before attempting home washing.
Spot cleaning
For minor marks, blot (do not rub) with a clean, dry cloth immediately. Do not apply water or cleaning agents directly to the fabric without professional advice.
Storing Your Saree
Use muslin cloth
Store your saree wrapped or folded in a soft muslin cloth. Muslin is breathable and will not trap moisture or cause the fabric to sweat. Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers, which can cause silk to yellow and zari to tarnish.
Keep away from direct sunlight
Prolonged exposure to sunlight will fade the colour of silk and weaken the fibres. Store your sarees in a cool, dark place — a wardrobe or drawer away from windows.
Avoid moisture and humidity
Moisture is the enemy of both silk and zari. In humid climates, consider placing silica gel packets near your stored sarees to absorb excess moisture. Do not store sarees in damp or poorly ventilated spaces.
Refold periodically
If a saree is stored folded for a long time, the fold lines can weaken the fabric over time. Refold your sarees along different lines every few months to distribute the stress.
Store separately
Store sarees separately from each other, or with muslin between them. Zari from one saree can snag or scratch the surface of another.
Caring for Zari
Zari — the metallic thread woven into Banarasi sarees — requires particular care:
- Do not iron zari work directly. Always use a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric, and use a low heat setting
- Avoid contact with perfume, deodorant, or hairspray directly on the fabric — the chemicals can tarnish zari
- Do not rub or scrub zari areas — the metallic threads can break or fray
- Antique zari (with a naturally muted, aged finish) is particularly delicate — handle with extra care
Wearing Your Saree
- Apply perfume and deodorant before draping your saree, and allow them to dry completely before the fabric comes into contact with your skin
- Avoid wearing heavy jewellery that could snag the fabric, particularly with organza or tissue sarees
- If you are wearing a saree for an extended period, consider using saree pins carefully to avoid pulling the fabric
After Wearing
- Air your saree for a few hours before storing — this allows any moisture from body heat to evaporate
- Do not store a saree immediately after wearing without airing it first
- If the saree needs cleaning after wearing, take it to a dry cleaner promptly rather than storing it soiled
A Note on Handwoven Sarees
All Neem Tres sarees are handwoven or handcrafted. Minor irregularities in the weave, zari, or finish are inherent to handloom textiles — they are not defects, and they do not affect the durability or wearability of the saree. These irregularities are the fingerprints of the maker.
With the right care, your Neem Tres saree will be something you wear, treasure, and one day pass on.
