What-is-Katan-Silk-Everything-You-Need-to-Know

Categories

If you’ve been exploring Banarasi sarees, you’ve almost certainly come across the term katan silk. It appears on the finest sarees, the most expensive listings, and the pieces described as heirloom quality. But what exactly is katan silk, and what makes it different from other silks?

    What is Katan Silk?

Katan silk is a pure silk fabric in which both the warp (lengthwise threads) and the weft (crosswise threads) are made from twisted silk yarn. The twisting of the threads before weaving gives katan its characteristic smooth, taut surface, natural lustre, and excellent drape.

The word katan comes from the Arabic qatan, meaning “cotton” — though the fabric itself is pure silk. The term has been used in the Indian subcontinent for centuries to describe this specific type of tightly woven, twisted-thread silk.

    How Katan Silk is Made

The process begins with raw silk threads, which are twisted together to create a stronger, more tightly wound yarn. These twisted threads are then used for both the warp and weft on the loom. The tight twist gives the finished fabric its smooth surface and structural integrity.

In Banarasi katan sarees, zari (gold or silver metallic thread) is woven into the katan base to create motifs, borders, and all-over patterns. The combination of the smooth silk base and the metallic zari creates the distinctive lustre that Banarasi katan sarees are known for.

    What Makes Katan Silk Special?

    • Lustre: Katan has a natural, deep sheen that comes from the silk itself — not from any finishing treatment
    • Drape: The tightly twisted threads give katan a structured yet fluid drape — it holds its shape while moving gracefully
    • Durability: Katan is one of the most durable silk weaves — properly cared for, a katan saree can last generations
    • Weight: Katan is heavier than organza or soft silk, giving it a substantial, luxurious feel
    • Zari compatibility: The tight weave of katan holds zari work exceptionally well, making it the preferred base for the most intricate Banarasi brocade

    Katan vs Other Banarasi Silks

Fabric Weight Drape Lustre Best for
Katan silk Heavy Structured, fluid Deep, natural Bridal, heirloom, formal
Soft silk Light-medium Fluid, easy Soft sheen Festive, extended wear
Organza Very light Sheer, crisp Luminous Warm weather, evening
Tissue Light Sheer, fluid Metallic shimmer Festive, occasion wear
Georgette Light Fluid, crinkled Matte Everyday, casual formal

How to Identify Genuine Katan Silk

    • Genuine katan has a smooth, cool feel against the skin
    • It has a deep, natural lustre — not a surface shine
    • When you rub a small section between your fingers, it should feel warm (silk generates heat from friction)
    • Katan is heavier than most other silk saree fabrics — it has substance
    • Minor irregularities in handwoven katan are a sign of authenticity

    Caring for Katan Silk

Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not iron zari work directly — use a pressing cloth. Avoid contact with perfume or deodorant on the fabric. With proper care, a katan silk saree will last a lifetime.
